To those who try epoxy fly b4... the biggest problem are... tears marks and unevenness of the epoxy coating... this is due to extra over of the epoxy applied....
My advise is.... use minimum amount ( a drop of each )of epoxy each time... apply them layer by layer... with a rotating vise.. the epoxy will lay evenly....
As for the tail... ummmm... you will need small mylar tube to do that, after trimming your hackle, just insect it tru and secure the end with a drop of super glue ( nick sell saltwater heckle in loose pack...) ... or you can tie your hackle on a mono line, then rap it with flash material... ( ini lagi susah )
Will show you guys the step by step next time...

Thanks for the info dron..
Still not used to using epoxy, need some help.. The epoxy has 2 tubes, how do i mix them together.. should i use it directly from the tubes or mix them up on a container and then only i put it to the fly.. The reason i said this bcoz the tubes have 2 separate nozzle, i'm scared if i press it it will fall on 2 separate place and they dont mix evenly..
Hope u guys here can teach me a few tips..

when using epoxies, care must be given to proportions. if u can get hold of syringes(picagari), without the needle of course, that would be perfect. clean the syringes with soap/detergent to remove the silicone grease. dry it. then label 2 syringes, harderner, and the other, resin.
i solely use devcon epoxies(5mins, 10mins or standard 30mins). squeeze one tube of devcon resin into the designated syringe, and likewise the hardener. calibrate the amount in both syringes. now u are ready.
if u expel 1ml of resin, do the same for the hardener.
mix slowly and thoroughly with a solid object like paperclip/plastic and try to avoid brushes. brushes tend to cause the mixture to bubble a lot, something which u want to avoid.
by flaming the mixture a little with a whiff of flame from a lighter, the bubbles will disappear. this also quickens the hardening process. but beware, overflaming will cause the mixture to attain a bronze-tinged transparency. overflaming it will also cause bubble to form again, plus prematurely hardening the epoxy.
try playing with diff types of epoxies. by far, devcon is most superior. afterall, i'm one of the deciples of the devcon god(aka Lapala).
even better, get hold of UV glue. i believe it's readily available in singapore if u do not want to buy it from the states. simply apply required amoun of glue to fly, and then by using the supplied UV lightsource, the glue will harden exactly according to the shape of the applied glue. this is lightyears ahead of conventional epoxies

Thanks 4 the info FIR3 TIG3R..
Yesterday i tried on my own using the epoxy, coz cannot tahan already watching the epoxy staring at me and my vise also keep on telling 'Come on, try one la'.. So i decided to try, i'm using a devcon 5 mnts epoxy which i bought at nick's place. The 1st fly my epoxy coating quite thick, as for the 2nd my coating seem to be a little thinner. After my 3rd fly i seem to know what amount to use.. Now i think i will 'copy' a bit of dron.fly & FIR3 TIG3R technics to improvise on my fly tying.. Thanks to all the people who post their fly and willing to share all the info's & technics.. Maybe one day i will be able to post my fly here also..
Keep it up you guys.. |

| Last time at ACE Hardware got 5 minute Devcon with both resin and hardener come in syringes side by side. Bit expensive but very handy. Just press once both will mix equally. |

razor bro, anything to 'poison' ppl laa hahahha...
would be glad to share some poison always.
as for my personal preference, i prefer using the regular 30min devcon as it is more versatile. if i flame it, i will shorten the handling time, and will harden much faster. but on the first instance of flaming the epoxy, it will begin to liquify. this is when u can turn ur fly and let the epoxy flow evenly. sometimes i overflame the epoxy and it hardens prematurely, becomes burnt, and has too many bubbles thus covering any details of the fly. rosak flies bertaburan in my house.
well, learning from failures is one thing, but do learn from other people's failures.
enjoy bro!

There is another way to reduce the weight of our epoxy flies....

as per the second fly from top... I manage to use only half of the epoxy needed....
Once I have finished tying the flies, before applying any epoxy, I tape it with a magic tape... cut and trim it to the shape... then apply a thin layer of epoxy... ( you can use transparent tape for that too.. )
Happy tying...

Dron,
Your flies are really super cool!! Quite embarrass to show my pattern here . But I believe this pattern really deserve a place in our fly box, Brook Blonde fly. And I think can widely be used for our local species. It so simple, you can tie 20-30 within 1 hour, especially when you want to tie last minute fly. For guy like me, tangan sudah keras or for new beginner, I believe this fly is a go to fly.
In fact this fly is a basic for most of saltwater pattern today. You can paint an eye. Put the epoxy, become surf candy, turn upside down, put bead/lead head become Clouser, Charlie, Cat Whisker. Add a few strand of peacok herl, Crystal Flash become Deceiver. Put "sotong head" become "Condom Fly", another proven pattern for our local species, created by our local Irhamy.
This pattern is also similar to Mickey Finn and Black Nose Dace which is similar but using for freshwater and have slim body.
The original is using bucktail, but most artificial material can be used, craft fur, polar fiber. But I do believe bucktail is more superior, as most artificial material tend to tangle at hook bend.

This is not my pictures, I took is somewhere from website can't remember the saddress. But it will look similar like this. You can use most flash material for the body, tinsel, crystal flash, flashabou as long as long as the material is durable.
Here's the picture for Mickey Finn

Brook Blonde fly, another fly which is so simple and with different material, and modification to imitate local bait fish... we can turn this to Brook Klang fly, Brook CWC fly, Brook Kenyir fly... all local fly...
Thanks for the idea...
